To a solution of 2-cyano-2-methylpropyl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (760 mg) and 4-bromo-3,5-dimethylphenol (500 mg) in N,N-dimethylformamide (8 mL) is added Cs2CO3 (2.0 g). The mixture is stirred for 12 hours at 80° C., diluted with diethylether and washed with water and brine. After drying (MgSO4) the solvent is evaporated and the residue is chromatographed on silica gel (petrole ether/ethyl acetate 90:10→60:40) to give the title compound. Yield: 572 mg; Mass spectrum (ESI+): m/z=282 [M+H]+.
