Procedure

A mixture of 4-benzyloxy-1-(2-methoxy-ethyl)-1H-pyridin-2-one (1.4 g) and 10% palladium on carbon (100 mg) was stirred in ethyl acetate (50 mL) under a hydrogen atmosphere for 17 h. Then, the mixture was filtered through celite and concentrated to afford 4-hydroxy-1-(2-methoxy-ethyl)-1H-pyridin-2-one as a colourless solid. δH (300 MHz, CH3OD) 3.67 (2H, t), 4.10 (2H, t), 4.86 (3H, s), 5.85 (1H, d), 6.04 (1H, dd) and 7.48 (1H, d).
