To a solution of 1-methyl-5-nitro-3-thiazol-5-yl-1H-pyridin-2-one (290 mg, 1.22 mmol) in ethanol (10 mL) was added SnCl2 (2.342 g, 12.22 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 90° C. for 15 h. After cooled to rt, sat. NaHCO3 (aq) was added dropwise to the reaction to adjust the pH to 9-10. The resulting solution was filtered through a Celite pad. The filtrate was concentrated to dryness in vacuo to afford the crude product, which was used directly in the next step without purification. MS (ES+): m/z 208.21 [MH+]. HPLC: tR=1.47 min (ZQ2000, polar—5 min).
