Procedure
A solution of 8.4 g (120 mmol) of sodium nitrite in 25 ml of water is added dropwise at 0° C. to a suspension of 15.5 g (116 mmol) of 3-oxotetrahydrothiophene dioxide (M. A. Smith et al., J. Chem. Soc. (c) 1967, 2171) in 70 ml of water and 10 ml of conc. hydrochloric acid. After 1 hour at 0° C., the product is filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried in vacuo. 11.5 g (61%) of 2-hydroxyimino-3-oxotetrahydrothiophene dioxide, m.p. 148° C., are obtained.
