To a solution of 1-(3-biphenylyl)-5hydroxymethylbenzimidazole (61a) (0.2 g, 0.7 mmol) in toluene (3 ml) was added benzeneseleninic acid (0.19 g, 1 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to 85° C. for 2 hours. After cooling, the product was filtered off and washed thoroughly with warm water. Yield: 80 mg, 0.27 mmol, 38%. mp 170°-172° C.
