To a solution of 2-methyl-2-p-tolyl-propan-1-ol (405 mg, 2.46 mmol) in DMF (5 mL) was added imidazole (335 mg, 4.92 mmol) followed by tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (465 mg, 3.08 mmol). The reaction was stirred for 24 h and water was added. The aqueous solution was washed with EtOAc (3×). The combined organic solutions were washed with water (4×). The organic solution was dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated. Medium pressure chromatography (hexanes) provided tert-butyl-dimethyl-(2-methyl-2-p-tolyl-propoxy)-silane (619 mg). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.26 (d, 2H), 7.10 (d, 2H), 3.49 (s, 2H), 2.31 (s, 3H), 1.27 (s, 6H), 0.85 (s, 9H), −0.06 (s, 6H).
