Procedure

Treatment of the product of part (ii) (3.10 g) with chloromethyllithium (prepared from bromochloromethane (1.78 g) and a 1.6M solution of n-butyllithium in hexane (8.20 ml)) according to the method of Example 11(iii) gave the title compound as a gun (2.25 g), which was used directly in the next stage.
