Procedure

A mixture of acetic anhydride (184 ml) and formic acid (93 ml) was stirred for 30 minutes at room temperature. The mixture was cooled at 5° C. with ice-bath and added to 1-(2-methylsulfonyloxyethyl)-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-aminopyrazole (270 g). The mixture was stirred for 3 hours under ice-cooling. The reaction mixture was evaporated to give crystals. To the crystals was added diisopropyl ether and the mixture was stirred for 1 hour. The crystals were collected by filtration to give 1-(2-methylsulfonyloxyethyl)-4-ethoxycarbonyl-5-formamidopyrazole (291.5 g).
