Procedure
To a stirred solution of 4-oxo-1-phenyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-indazole-5-carbaldehyde (1.1 g, 4.58 mol) in toluene (50 mL) and diethylether (25 mL) was added dimethylamine (3 mL, 6 mmol) as a solution in THF (10 mL). The reaction was stirred for at room temperature for 40 hours. The reaction was then concentrated under reduced pressure to give a brown residue, which was triturated with hexane to give the desired product (1 g, 80%) as a solid. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6, 400 MHz): δδ 7.91 (s, 1H), 7.59-7.53 (m, 4H), 7.45-7.42 (m, 1H), 7.36 (s, 1H), 3.07 (s, 6H), 2.95 (s, 4H); LCMS [M+H]: 267.
