A solution of 3-(4-methoxy-benzyl)-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-3H-pyrazolo[3,4-c][2,7]naphthyridine (1.90 g, 6.46 mmol) in trifluoroacetic acid (20 mL) was heated at 65° C. for 16 hours. On completion of the reaction, toluene (10 mL) was added and the reaction mixture evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to give the desired product as a dark brown gel. The crude product was triturated with 1,4-dioxane. The resulting solid was filtered to give the desired product, 6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-3H-pyrazolo[3,4-c][2,7]naphthyridin-7-ium 2,2,2-trifluoroacetate as a tan powder (2.52 g, 97%)
