To 3-(4-methoxybenzyl)-7-(phenylsulfonyl)-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-3H-pyrazolo[3,4-c][2,7]naphthyridine (0.109 g, 2.51 mmol) was added trifluoroacetic acid (2 mL). The reaction mixture was heated at 65° C. for 16 hours. On completion of the reaction, toluene (5 mL) was added. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to yield a dark brown solid. The crude product was purified using reverse phase HPLC chromatography to give the desired product, 7-(phenylsulfonyl)-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-3H-pyrazolo[3,4-c][2,7]naphthyridine as a white solid (0.043 g, 54%). M.p.=270-271° C.; 400 MHz 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ: 13.59 (s, 1H), 8.33 (s, 1H), 8.1 (d, J=1.2 Hz, 1H), 7.88-7.84 (m, 2H), 7.73-7.61 (m, 3H), 4.35 (s, 2H), 3.43 (t, J=5.6 Hz, 2H), 3.14 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 2H); LCMS [M+H]: 315.
