To the crude tert-butyl 1-o-tolyl-8,9-dihydro-3H-pyrazolo[3,4-c][2,7]naphthyridine-7(6H)-carboxylate obtained from step 1 was added anhydrous methanol (2 mL) followed by a 4N solution of HCl gas in 1,4-dioxane (0.175 mL). The reaction mixture was shaken at 55° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the crude desired product, 1-o-tolyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-3H-pyrazolo[3,4-c][2,7]naphthyridine hydrochloride salt, which was used in the next step without any further purification.
