To a mixture of 6-formyl-1H-indazole-3-carbonitrile (1.10 g, 6.4 mmol) and 2-oxindole (871 mg, 6.5 mmol) in EtOH (25 mL) was added piperidine (0.1 mL, 1 mmol). The resulting mixture was refluxed (oil temp. 75° C.) for 90 min, then cooled to rt. The resulting precipitate was collected by suction filtration and dried to give the title compound as an orange solid (1.5 g, 82%) 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 14.6 (s, 1H), 10.66 (s, 1H), 8.09 (s, 1H), 8.01 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 1H) 7.78 (s, 1H), 7.67 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 1H), 7.48 (d, 1H, J=7.8 Hz), 7.24 (t, J=7.6 Hz, 1H), 6.88 (d, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 6.83 (t, J=7.8 Hz, 1H).
