Procedure

Sodium azide (543 mg, 8.35 mmol) was added to a mixture of 5-bromo-8-cyclopentyl-2-methylsulfanyl-8H-pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-7-one (1.42 g, 4.17 mmol) in DMF (17 mL) at RT and the reaction mixture was heated to 90° C. in a microwave reactor for 30 min. The resulting mixture was then cooled to RT and quenched with water (70 mL). The solid that formed was collected by filtration, dried under reduced pressure, dissolved in THF and adsorbed onto silica gel. This material was purified by flash chromatography (from 10 to >25% EtOAc/hexanes in 20 min) to afford 0.720 g (57% yield) of 5-azido-8-cyclopentyl-2-methylsulfanyl-8H-pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-7-one as a yellow solid. MS=303 [M+H]+.
