Procedure

HCl gas was passed for approximately 1 hour through a solution at 0° C. of 10.5 g (1 equiv.) of tert-butyl 2-(4-butyl-4-(dimethylamino)piperidin-1-yl)ethyl(methyl)-carbamate in 1000 ml of chloroform. The reaction mixture was then stirred for 12 hours at room temperature. The progress of the reaction was monitored by thin-layer chromatography (20% MeOH/CHCl3). When the reaction was complete, the solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was washed with hexane (3×50 ml) and ethyl acetate (3×50 ml) and dried. 9 g (87%) of product were obtained in the form of a white solid.
