Procedure

A round-bottom flask containing 1.0 g (4.5 mmol) of 6-bromo-2-naphthol, 1,2-dibromoethane (135 mmol, 12 mL), potassium hydroxide (5 mL of a 40% solution) and tetrabutylammonium bromide (1.35 mmol, 0.43 g) was heated at 100° C. for 3 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with 150 mL of CH2Cl2 and washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under vacuum to give the desired compound in 100% as a pale brown solid; 1HNMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 3.70 (t, 2H), 4.40 (t, 2H), 7.05-7.90 (m, 6H). MS (DCI) m/z 330 (M+).
