Procedure
5-(4-Isopropyl-phenyl)-5-oxo-pentanoic acid (5 g, 21.3 mmol) was dissolved in 75 mL ethanol in a 250 mL flask. Sodium hydroxide (0.85 g, 21.3 mmol) was added and the reaction was stirred overnight under reduced pressure on a rotary evaporator. The solid was dried under vacuum and used without further purification. Found: C, 60.24; H, 6.66; Na, 9.21%; C14H17O3Na requires C, 61.28; H, 6.98; Na, 8.38%;
