Procedure
Triethylamine (0.5 ml) was added to 5-cyclopropyl-4-(3,4-dichloro-2-methylsulphonylbenzoyl)isoxazole (1.0 g) in dichloromethane. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2.5 hours and evaporated to dryness. The residue was suspended in hydrochloric acid (2M) and was extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layer was washed with water, dried (Na2SO4) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness to give 2-cyano-3-cyclopropyl-1-(3,4-dichloro-2-methylsulphonylphenyl)propan-1,3-dione (COMPOUND 623) as a white solid, m.p. 88°-90° C.45
