Procedure
Triethylamine (0.58 g) was added to a stirred solution of 4(2-bromo-3-methoxy-4-methylsulphenylbenzoyl)-5-cyclopropylisoxazole (2.0 g) in dichloromethane and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The mixture was evaporated to dryness and the residue triturated with ether and filtered. The solid was re-dissolved in dichloromethane and washed with hydrochloric acid (2M). The organic layer was washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and the residue triturated with ether and filtered to give 1-(2-bromo-3-methoxy-4-methylsulphenylphenyl)-2-cyano-3-cyclopropylpropan-1,3-dione (COMPOUND 661, 1.33 g) as a white solid, m.p. 128°-129° C.
