Procedure

A mixture of 2-nitro-4-trifluoromethylbenzonitrile (10.8 g), 1-methyl-1-propanethiol (7.5 g) and potassium carbonate (8.3 g) in acetonitrile was stirred and heated at reflux for 8 hours. It was cooled, water was added and the layers were separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate and the combined organic layers were washed with water, dried (magnesium sulphate) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and the residue was purified by chromatography eluted with a mixture of ethyl acetate and cyclohexane to give 2-(1-methylpropylsulphenyl)-4-trifluoromethylbenzonitrile (11.2 g) as a yellow oil NMR (CDCl3); 1.0(t,3H), 1.35(d,3H), 1.7(m,2H), 3.45(m,1H), 7.5(d,1H), 7.7(s,1H), 7.75(d,1H).
