Procedure
The cyclohexene VI (0.57 g) is dissolved in methanol (50 ml) in the presence of 10% Pd/C (50 mg) and of 3N HCl (0.85 ml). The reaction mixture is stirred under a slight hydrogen pressure for 20 h. The catalyst is removed by filtration and the solvent is driven off under vacuum. The residue is taken up in a saturated K2CO3 solution and the aqueous phase is extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase is dried over Na2SO4 and then evaporated under vacuum to provide the reduced derivative VIII (0.46 g) in the form of an oil.
