Procedure

A mixture of 1.4 g of enantiomer A which is methyl [8-(3-methylureido)-4,5-dihydro-4-oxo-10H-imidazo[1,2-a]indeno[1,2-e]pyrazin-10-yl]acetate, 13 ml of 8N hydrochloric acid and 65 ml of dioxane is heated at a temperature in the region of 40° C. for 33 hours. The reaction mixture is filtered and the solid is washed with ethyl ether and dried under vacuum (1 mmHg; 0.13 kPa). 0.9 g of (+)-[8-(3-methylureido)-4,5-dihydro-4-oxo-10H-imidazo[1,2-a]indeno[1,2-e]pyrazin-10-yl)acetic acid hydrochloride is obtained in the form of a yellow solid melting above 260° C. (Analysis, % calculated C: 52.38, H: 4.14, Cl: 9.10, N: 17.97, O: 16.42, % found C: 52.4, H: 3.7, N: 17.8; [α]20D =+94.2°).
