2,4-Dichloro-3-methoxycarbonylbenzoylchloride (34.76 g) was stirred and heated under reflux with methanol for 15 hours. After cooling, the solvent was evaporated and the residue recrystallised from cyclohexane to give dimethyl 2,4-dichloroisophthaloate (16.04 g) as a beige solid, NMR (DMSO D6) δ3.87 (3H,s), 3.94 (3H,s), 7.74 (1H,d), 7.94 (1H,d).
