A mixture containing 2.75 g of 3,4-dihydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde, 3.8 g of 1,3-dicyclopropyl-l,3-propanedione, 0.2 ml of piperidine and 0.4 ml of acetic acid was refluxed for 1 h with a Dean-Stark separator. After cooling the product was filtered and recrystallized from acetic acid. Yield 2.85 g, mp 159°-162° C.
