29.5 g (80.7 mmol) of dimethyl N-(2-naphthalenesulfonyl)-L- or D-glutamate were dissolved in 500 ml of methanol and stirred with 170 ml (340 mmol) of 2N sodium hydroxide solution overnight. The pH was adjusted to 1 with concentrated hydrochloric acid, the solution was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure, the residue was partitioned between a large volume of methylene chloride and a small volume of water, the methylene chloride phase was dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated, and the residue was recrystallized from methylene chloride to give 20.3 g (75% of theory) of N-(2-naphthalenesulfonyl)-L- or D-glutamic acid as white solid.
