Procedure

22.1 g of ethyl 4-chloro-2,2-dimethylbutyrate and 14.5 g of potassium thiocyanate were dissolved in 100 ml of dimethylformamide, followed by stirring at 100° C. for 7 hours. The reaction mixture was added to 500 ml of water and extracted with ethyl ether. After the extract was washed with water and dried over MgSO4, the solvent was distilled off. The residue was distilled under reduced pressure to yield 16.4 g of the title compound in the form of a colorless oily substance.
