Procedure
1 ml. (9.1 mmoles) of benzaldehyde is added to a solution of 2.0 g. (6.6 mmoles) of 1-methyl-4-amino-5-phenyl-7-chloro-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-2H-1,4-benzodiazepine-2-one in 20 ml. of benzene, and the mixture is stirred at room temperature overnight. At the end of the reaction the mixture is evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure, the residue is triturated with 20 ml. of ether, and the solid substance is filtered off. 2.1 g. (80.7 %) of 1-methyl-4-benzalamino-5-phenyl-7-chloro-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-2H-1,4-benzodiazepine-2-one are obtained. M.p.: 157°-158° C. (after recrystallization from ethanol). Rf(4) = 0.7.
