Procedure

8.0 g of the 5-chloroacetyl-8-hydroxycarbostyril (IV) (IV) obtained Example 4 or 8 was suspended in 100 ml of ethanol, and 10 g of tert-butylamine was added dropwise to the resulting suspension while stirring followed by stirring at 55° to 60° C. for 5 hours. After the mixture was concentrated to half the volume, concentrated hydrochloric acid was added thereto to adjust the mixture to a pH of 2 to 3. The precipitated crystals were filtered, washed with acetone and recrystallized from ethanol to obtain 4.1 g of 5-tert-butylaminoacetyl-8-hydroxycarbostyril (II) having a melting point of 291° - 293° C. (with decomposition) as pale yellow crystals.
