Procedure
A solution of 6-nitro-2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-hydroxyethylamino)methyl-4-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-1-yl)-2H-1-benzopyran (0.44 g, 1.18 mmol) in diethylether was treated with excess ethanolic hydrochloric acid (2M) and the resulting precipitate isolated by filtration, to give 0.36 g of 6-nitro-2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-hydroxyethylamino)methyl-4-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-1-yl)-2H-1-benzopyran hydrochloride, m.p. 225° C.
