Procedure
A solution of 2-carbomethoxy-4-cyano-4-(3-cyclopropylmethoxy-4-methoxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one (1.0 g, 2.8 mmol) and sodium hydride (80% dispersion in mineral oil, 0.09 g, 3.1 mmol) in dry hexamethylphosphoric triamide (8 mL) was stirred under an argon atmosphere at room temperature for 0.5 h. Chloromethylmethyl ether (0.26 mL, 3.4 mmol) was added and stirring was continued for 4.5 h. The mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, was extracted three times, the organic layer was dried (sodium sulfate) and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The product was purified by flash chromatography, eluting with 3:1 hexanes/ethyl acetate, to provide a white solid (0.5 g, 44%): m.p. 98°-99° C.
