Procedure

Hydrogen chloride gas was bubbled through a mixture of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-7-carbonitrile (1.0 g, 7.0 mmol), methanol (10 ml) and ether (25 ml) at room temperature for 3 minutes. The resultant mixture was stirred for 3 hours. The solid material was isolated by filtration and was washed with diethyl ether to furnish a 80% pure tan solid (1.7 g). MS:
