A solution of 1H-Indazole-5-carbaldehyde (2.05 mmol) and N-bromosuccinimide (3.08 mmol) in DMF (8 mL) was stirred at rt for 3 h, then concentrated under reduced pressure. Chromatographic purification of the residue (silica gel, hexanes to hexanes:EtOAc, 1:1) afforded 3-bromo-1H-indazole-5-carbaldehyde as pale yellow solid.
