A solution of methyl N-[(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)carbamoyl]-L-valinate (4.2 g) and triethylamine (1.3 g) in methanol was stirred while heating to reflux for 5 hr. After the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, the residue was purified by column chromatography (NH silica gel cartridge, hexane/ethyl acetate) to afford (5S)-3-(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-5-(propan-2-yl)imidazolidine-2,4-dione (4.3 g).
