A solution of ethyl 4-methyl-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carboxylate in dioxane (330 mg, 1.56 mmol) was treated with SeO2 (220 mg, 2.0 mmol) at 100° C. for 3 days. After cooling, the reaction mixture was concentrated and the residue was purified by flash chromatography (20% ethyl acetate in hexane) to provide the title compound. MS (DCI/NH3) m/z 227 (M+H)+.
