Procedure
A mixture of 4-bromo-2-fluorobenzyl bromide (30.4 g, 114 mmol, 1 eq), 1-methylsulfonylpiperazine (20.0 g, 114 mmol, 1 eq) and K2CO3 (31.6 g, 228 mmol, 2 eq) in acetonitrile (500 mL) was stirred at 40° C. for 18 h. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, the mixture was filtered through Celite, and washed with EtOAc. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to yield 1-(4-Bromo-2-fluoro-benzyl)-4-methanesulfonyl-piperazine (Intermediate 5).
