Procedure

To a solution of methyl 6-(6-methoxy-2-phenyl-1H-indol-3-ylmethyl)pyridine-2-carboxylate (500 mg) in N,N-dimethylformamide (5.4 mL) were added cesium carbonate (1.09 g) and methyl iodide (0.168 mL), and this mixture was stirred at room temperature for 67 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with water, followed by extraction with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water and saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluting solvent: ethyl acetate-hexane) to obtain the title compound (508 mg). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ ppm: 3.61 (3H, s), 3.89 (3H, s), 4.02 (3H, s), 4.35 (2H, s), 6.74 (1H, dd, J=2.3, 8.5 Hz), 6.84 (1H, d, J=2.3 Hz), 7.12-7.18 (1H, m), 7.28 (1H, d, J=8.5 Hz), 7.33-7.49 (5H, m), 7.59 (1H, t, J=7.8 Hz), 7.88-7.94 (1H, m).
