Procedure
To a solution of 3-[6-(bromomethyl)pyridin-2-ylmethyl]-6-methoxy-2-phenyl-1H-indole (1.37 g) in water/ethanol/tetrahydrofuran (4 mL/16 mL/4 mL) was added potassium cyanide (263 mg), and the mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 13.5 hours. The reaction mixture was left to be cooled and concentrated under reduced pressure. To the residue was added water, followed by extraction with dichloromethane. The organic layer was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluting solvent: ethyl acetate-hexane) to obtain the title compound (1.05 g). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ ppm: 3.86 (3H, s), 3.95 (2H, s), 4.39 (2H, s), 6.76 (1H, dd, J=2.3, 8.5 Hz), 6.91 (1H, d, J=2.3 Hz), 7.04 (1H, d, J=7.8 Hz), 7.23 (1H, d, J=7.5 Hz), 7.30-7.39 (2H, m), 7.39-7.49 (2H, m), 7.50-7.61 (3H, m), 8.05 (1H, br s).
