Ethyl N-{[6-hydroxy-2,4-dioxo-3-(phenylmethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-5-pyrimidinyl]carbonyl}glycinate. Ethyl isocyanatoacetate (2.24 mL, 20 mmoles) was added dropwise to a solution of 1-(phenylmethyl)-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-pyrimidinetrione (4.4 g, 20 mmoles) and ethyl diisopropylamine (6.9 mL, 40 mmoles) in dichloromethane (120 mL) and stirred overnight under argon. The mixture was washed with 1 molar hydrochloric acid, water and brine, dried and evaporated. The solid was slurried in diethyl ether, collected, washed with diethyl ether and hexane, dried to give the title compound (5.1 g, 73%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 12.13 (br. s., 1 H), 9.84 (br. s., 1 H), 7.13-7.48 (m, 5 H), 4.95 (s, 2 H), 4.17 (d, 2 H), 4.15 (q, 2 H), 1.21 (t, J=7.20 Hz, 3 H)
