Procedure

A solution of 6 grams of allyl 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-2-palmitamido-β-D-glucopyranoside (Compound 1a) in 150 ml. of methanol was refluxed for about 30 minutes after the addition of a piece of sodium metal. A sulfonic cation exchange resin was added to remove the sodium, followed by hot filtration. The filtrate was concentrated on a hot plate and stored overnight in a freezer. It was then filtered to yield the desired compound as a gelatinous solid.
