To 500 mg. of Compound 6 in a mixture of 2.0 ml. of ethanol, benzene and water (7:3:1) 40 mg. of tris(triphenylphosphine)rhodium(I) chloride and 15 mg. of 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]octane were added. The reaction mixture was heated under reflux overnight. Thin layer chromatography (5% acetone in CHCl3) showed the reaction to be complete. The reaction was conducted in the general manner described by Corey et al, in J. Org. Chem., 38 (1973) 3224 and P. A. Gent et al, J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun., (1974) 277-278. A high yield of Compound 7 was obtained.
