14.4 g of the product described under (a), 6 ml of 35% strength aqueous formaldehyde solution and 10 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid in 20 ml of methanol are heated under reflux for 1 day. On distilling off the methanol, the product crystallizes out. After cooling, it is filtered off with suction and the resulting product (13.5 g, 91% of theory) is reacted further under (c) without further purification.
