Procedure

To a mixture of 10 ml of formic acid and 20 ml of formalin was added 3 g of (S)-benzyl 4-oxo-2-azetidine-carboxylate (14). The resulting mixture was kept at 50° C. for 15 minutes. After cooling, the mixture was made alkaline with a saturated sodium bicarbonate aqueous solution and extracted twice with 50 ml of ether. The ethereal extracts were washed with a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution and then dried. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure and the residue thus obtained was purified by column chromatography using silica gel. Thus, 970 mg of (S)-benzyl 1-hydroxymethyl-4-oxo-2-azetidinecarboxylate (15) and 1.78 g of (S)-benzyl 1-formyloxymethyl-4-oxo-2-azetidinecarboxylate (16) were obtained.
