Procedure

Methyl 3-(3,5-diisopropyl-4-methoxyphenyl)acrylate. 3,5-diisopropyl-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (881 mg) was stirred with silica-gel (2.7 g) for about 10 minutes to get a free powder. Ph3P═CHCOOCH3 (1.7 g) was added, followed by 10 mL of hexane. The reaction mixture was heated at 50° C. for 24 hours, and the resulting mixture was loaded on a silica-gel column. Chromatography, with diethyl ether:hexane (10:90) as the eluent, provided the ester (944 mg).
