(2E)-3-[4-(2-pyridinyl)phenyl]-2-propenal (500 mg, 2.4 mmol, prepared as described in Reference Example 32) was dissolved in THF (10 mL) and methanol (10 mL) at 0° C. Sodium borohydride (109 mg, 2.9 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 30 min. The reaction mixture was concentrated. Water (10 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×15 mL). The organic layer was collected, dried and concentrated. MS 212 (M+H)+.
