Procedure

600 ml of a 1.5% strength aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution are added within 3 minutes at 10° C. with vigorous stirring to a solution of 16.2 g (0.048 mole) of 5-trifluoromethyl-2-[(4-methoxy-2-pyridylmethyl)thio]-(1H)-benzimidazole in 960 ml of ethyl acetate. The mixture is then stirred for a further 2 minutes. The organic phase is separated off and is washed with 100 ml of distilled water. The aqueous phase is adjusted to pH 7-8 by addition of glacial acetic acid and is then extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The extracts are washed with water and the combined organic phases are then concentrated to a volume of 100 ml and cooled in an ice bath. The precipitate which has separated out is filtered off with suction and washed with cold ethyl acetate. Yield: 13.2 g of m.p. 166° C. (decomposition).
