Procedure

m-Chloroperbenzoic acid (purity: 85%, 0.76 g.) was added to a solution of 2-oxo-7-phenylthioindoline (0.9 g.) in chloroform (20 ml.) with stirring under ice cooling. The mixture was stirred at the same temperature for an hour. To the reaction mixture was added chloroform (50 ml.), and the solution was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate and water, dried over magnesium sulfate and then evaporated. The resultant crystals (1.0 g.) were recrystallized from dioxane twice to give white prisms of the captioned compound (0.6 g.).
