Procedure
At 0° C., a solution of 3.6 g of trimethyl phosphite in 10 ml of diethyl ether is added dropwise to a solution of 5.1 g of 3-(4-chlorophenyl)propionic acid chloride in 25 ml of diethyl ether. The mixture is first stirred for 2.5 hours at 0° C., then another 2 hours at room temperature. After concentration of the solution, the residue is distilled with the use of a bulb tube at 200°-205° C. and a pressure of 0.02 mm, yielding 5.2 g (74%) of 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-oxopropane-1-phosphonic acid dimethyl ester.
