180 g. of 1-butyryloxy-3,5-dimethyl-benzene are treated at room temperature with 340 g. of aluminium chloride. The mixture is strirred for 4 hours at 90°-95° C., then cooled at 70° C., poured onto ice and 3n aqueous hydrochloric acid and extracted with ether. The ether extract is washed with water to neutral reaction, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. There is obtained 2-butyryl-3,5-dimethyl-phenol, which melts at 48°-52° C. after recrystallization from petroleum ether.
