Procedure

1-Nitro-2,2-bis-[2-(2-thiazolylmethylthio)ethylamino]ethylene (4.5 g) was added to a stirred solution of an equivalent amount of sodium methaperiodate (2.3 g) in water (1600 ml), and the resulting solution was stirred at room temperature for 20 hours. Evaporation of the solvent and chromatographic purification of the residue on silica gel gave the title product as an oil. The structure of the product was confirmed by the 100 mHz n.m.r. spectrum in 2H6 -dimethylsulphoxide which showed the following resonances:
