Reaction Steps

Using the procedure of Step E of Example 6, a mixture of 9.4 g of the product of Step D, 25.2 ml of 36° Be sodium hydroxide and 51 ml of 95% ethanol was refluxed for 6 hours to obtain 7.3 g of 4-hydroxy-2-phenylmethyl-8-trifluoromethyl-quinoline-3-carboxylic acid melting at 252° C which was used as is for the next step.
